A Step-by-Step Guide to Reviewing Your Year and Planning Your Next Steps

When I signed with my new agent, I put together a list of all the many manuscripts I had sitting on a digital shelf in various states of readiness. I also looked back at my notebooks and calendar and recorded any blog posts, essays, poems, and other creative work I did.

I found the process reassuring (I actually am making progress, even though it doesn’t feel like it!) and insightful. I could see common themes and strengths, and I knew exactly what I wanted to work on next.

Now I do this at the end of the year, in between projects, or when I have too many ideas, and I’m not sure what to focus on.
